Some books are to be tasted, others to be swallowed Essay Example

Some books are to be tasted, others to be swallowed Paper The first novel that I finished reading was Jurassic Park, by Michael Chriton. That was the first book that captivated my imagination and brought me into the world of reading. I noticed that the book was far better than the movie. My imagination could take me any where and my mind painted extraordinary pictures of hundreds of beautiful dinosaurs walking along side fully developed characters with whom I could relate to. I felt their fear, joy, and even sadness. All I can say is that I was addicted, and I kept on reading. Since than, I have read hundreds of books. I treat the books I read with a lot of caution. Like everyone else, I feel that my time is very precious. If I invest my time into reading, than the reading must yield some sort of profit. As Samuel Patterson once put it, Books, like friends, should be few and well chosen. My best friends are friends from whom I might be able to gain some wisdom. The literature I choose to read must contain some wisdom that I can gain. The first book I read where I felt that I had truly gained some wisdom was, Platos Republic. I spent months reading the book. I slowly digest every single word that Socrates had spoken. Even though the book was nearly 3,000 years old, every single idea was totally new to me. I learned about justice, freedom, war, the good, the bad, politics, hate, love, god, and so much more. I was able to incorporate many of those ideas in the world we live in today. For a short time, I studied the Socratic Method, and tried to incorporate his style of conversation with my friends. The book was a book of wisdom. In some ways, it could even be a guide on how to live your life. Its the one book that I can easily recommend to everyone. The book tries to explain why American life has become so good over the last one hundred years. It sums up nearly 2,000 years of human struggle over food, money, and literature in order to unmask the reasons as to why we can live so comfortably in the 20th, and now the 21st, century. Perhaps the most significant argument the book made was of the worlds history during the dark ages of Europe. Apparently, while Europe was experiencing the dark ages, the rest of the world was busy at producing advanced mathematical concepts, pieces of art, and works of literature. The book opened my eyes to the world of Islam, a place where oil lamps were being used for lighting (instead of candles), where people washed every day, and beautiful churches were built in the name of god. Eventually, the book took me on a tour through the industrial age and it helped me to appreciate the life I have living in America. Another work of literature that helped set my mind to the way it is today is a short essay called A Message to Garcia, by Elbert Hubbard. This short ten page essay helped me to realize the one thing that must be learned the hard way, a strong and proper work ethic. After reading the essay, hundreds of thoughts burst into my head. I soon began to realize how the rich could become so rich, how America could become so prosperous, and even how to improve my laziness. I stopped asking so many questions and just got to work. No matter how much I might disapprove of something, if a job is given to me, I must try my best to complete the job. This short little essay changed the whole way I treat every second of my life. It is amazing that the mind is one part of the human body that improves the more you use it. I must agree with something that Francis Bacon once said, I would live to study, and not study to live. With that, I hope I can study as well as I live my life.

Augmentative or Alternative Communication for Disabled Students

Augmentative or Alternative Communication for Disabled Students Augmentative or alternative communication (AAC) refers to all forms of communication outside of oral speech. It may range from facial expressions and gestures to forms of assistive technology. In the field of special education, AAC comprises all communication methods for teaching students with severe language or speech disabilities. Who Uses AAC? Broadly, AAC is used by people from all walks of life at different times. A baby uses non-spoken communication to express herself, as might parents coming home to sleeping children after a night out. In particular, AAC is the method of communication used by individuals with severe speech and language disabilities, who may suffer from cerebral palsy,  autism, ALS, or who may be recovering from a stroke. These individuals are unable to use verbal speech or whose speech is extremely difficult to understand (a famous example: theoretical physicist and ALS sufferer Stephen Hawking). AAC Tools Gestures, communications boards, pictures, symbols, and drawings are common AAC tools. They may be low-tech (a simple laminated page of pictures) or sophisticated (a digitized speech output device). They are divided into two groups: aided communication systems and unaided systems. Unaided communications are delivered by the individuals body, without speech. This is akin to the baby above or the gesturing parents. Individuals who are compromised in their ability to gesture, and those for whom communication needs are richer and more subtle, will rely on aided communication systems. Communications boards and pictures use symbols to help relay the individuals needs. For example, a picture of a person eating would be used to convey hunger. Depending on the mental acuity of the individual, communications boards and picture books may range from very simple communications- yes, no, more- to very sophisticated compendia of very particular desires. Individuals with physical impairments in addition to communications challenges may be unable to point with their hands to a board or book. For them, a head pointer may be worn to facilitate the use of a communication board. All in all, the tools for AAC are many and varied and are personalized to meet the needs of the individual. Components of AAC When devising an AAC system for a student, there are three aspects to consider. The individual will need a method for representing the communications. This is the book or board of drawings, symbols, or written words. There must then be a way for the individual to select the desired symbol: either through a pointer, a scanner, or a computer cursor. Finally, the message has to be transmitted to caregivers and others around the individual. If the student is unable to share her communications board or book directly with the teacher, then there must be an auditory output- for example, a digitized or synthesized speech system. Considerations for Developing an AAC System for a Student A students doctors, therapists, and caregivers may work with a speech-language pathologist or computer expert to devise a suitable AAC for students. Systems that work in the home may need to be augmented for use in an inclusive classroom. Some considerations in devising a system are: 1. What are the individuals cognitive abilities?2. What are the individuals physical abilities?3. What is the most important vocabulary relevant to the individual?4. Consider the individuals motivation to use AAC and select the AAC system that will match. AAC organizations such as the American Speech-Language-Hearing Association (ASHA) and the AAC Institute may offer further resources for selecting and implementing AAC systems.

Policy and procedure Development Essay Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 500 words

Policy and procedure Development - Essay Example One such policy is the massage policy to control fatigue for cancer patients. The following policy and procedure provides a guide for the management of fatigue for cancer patients. Relaxing body massage is a proven non-pharmacological fatigue management therapy for cancer patients undergoing chemotherapy treatment (Bower, 2014). Back massage for cancer in-patients undergoing chemotherapy was developed through a randomized clinical trial in a controlled study. The study involved seventy patients who were divided into two groups including the control group and the group undergoing massage therapy (Mazlum, Chaharsoughi, Banihashem, & Vashani, 2013). The massage group received the service for 20 minutes every day 24 hours before chemotherapy and 24 hours after. The results from both control and massaged groups were recorded regarding the indices of vomiting and nausea in the measures of time, length, severity, and incidence. The results were later assessed using a Visual Analogue Scale and also using the BARF scales (Mazlum et al., 2013). The results were later analyzed using chi-square and Mann-Whitney. The analysis indicated that the incidences of nausea among the massaged group had reduced by 25.7 percent, the times, length, and severity had reduced by 0.35 times, 54 minutes, and 20 percent respectively (Mazlum et al., 2013). The research led to the conclusion that back massage on in-patients undergoing chemotherapy was essential. The nausea and vomiting effects were reduced significantly among all cancer patients receiving the massage. The instances of nausea and vomiting among the control group remained unchanged. The study led to the formulation of massage policies for patients receiving chemotherapy (Mazlum et al., 2013). Specialized massages combined with other non-pharmacological practices such as physical exercise have proved useful in the control of body fatigue. Long usage of drugs to stimulate the body overworks the body cells and is detrimental

Exploring a work of art Essay Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 2000 words

Exploring a work of art - Essay Example Usually, the piece of paper is rolled around the hard cardboard so that it can roll out easily when being used. The long length of paper is segmented using dotted lines to make it easy to tear when in use. The dotted lines are symmetrically placed to ensure a uniform utilization of the paper. Several folds exist at specific lengths from each other. Due the presence of perforation or pores at specific sections of the paper, it can easily be used by people. The hollow part of the cylindrical cardboard is placed on a holder that serves as the pivot when the paper is rolled. During use, it is rolled several times as it revolves about the holder. The toilet paper is usually translucent and only allows minimal intensity if light to pass through it. The hollow cardboard is rough and compact and consists of an interior white color and exterior brown color. The brown color is concealed by the rolls of the toilet paper but once the roll is completely utilized, the brown color is visible. Whereas, the white color is visible via the hollow part, the hollow part is made of hard paper than the one used on toilet paper rolls. The hard brown card does not disintegrate in water. The toilet rolls have a sweet fragrance that oozes out of them to give a feeling of relaxation. The perfume brings a feeling of freshness and the white color a sense of cleanliness. The color is appealing and creates a feeling of confidence. This work of art falls in the category of functional art category. (Lecture notes, AAD 251: Arts and Visual Literacy). Its functionality lies in its usage. People can use the toilet paper in the toilets. This describes its functionality as a work of art. Unlike some works of art that are merely displayed in rooms and buildings, this work of art serves a significant and almost unparalleled role in the toilet. It is also not as delicate as other works of art. Some works of art are brittle and can easily break down. The toilet paper only disintegrates when it

Literature Review Relating to levels of Physical Actiity and Older Essay

Literature Review Relating to levels of Physical Actiity and Older People - Essay Example Physical activity levels in older people in rural areas are comparatively less when we consider the urban elder people because of social, economical and cultural factors. The older generation of UK in general and that of Ireland in particular are very much reluctant in doing physical activities to maintain their physical and mental health (See appendix for the statistics). The rural areas of Ireland are sparsely populated with no cities or major towns, which made the problem even worse. Moreover transportation services like the train services are less to the rural areas of Ireland which made this area less developed. People over the age of 55 (Older people) in this region are not engaging in physical activity levels as laid down by the Irish Government. This paper is written as a literature review concentrating mainly on the older generation of the Irish people especially in rural areas. Aim of this literature review is to prove that lack of infrastructure facilities, development and awareness forced rural Irish older people to stay away from physical workouts. In this paper, I have reviewed relevant journals/ articles mainly from UK, America and Australia to establish the need of physical activities for older people. According to the World Health Organization (WHO), physical inactivity causes 2 million deaths a year worldwide and increases all causes of mortality (Medibank 2007, p.8). The advancements in science and technology and increasing living standards are the major reasons for the physical inactivity. For example, walking and cycling were the major means, people used to travel from one place to another earlier. But the arrival of new technology oriented industrialization, revolutionised the human life and people started to give up the traditional means of transportation, which once helped them to stay fit. Caspersen et al, (1985) defined physical

How others make benefit? How does Sutherland Global make impact on various sectors? Research Objectives It is very essential for a company to make a good relationship with the customer and the company. This should be the main motto of the company to make a customer happy after getting solved all the issues of the customer. The important factor to set up nonstop or long term achievement is by giving importance to the customers. The main advantage of the company is to deliver quality services to customers and will certainly increase the selling opportunities for a happy customer. By this the company will grow autonomously. Some companies only focus getting new customers and ignore the value of the old customers. They forget that these old customers has helped them the chance to grow. They knew that getting new clients instead of the old ones will be more profitable. But they forget that generating new clients will be more expensive than they are already in the asset. (Customer Service BPO 2008) Customer service always helps to make an industry more profitable. By keeping the old customers and gaining new ones, brilliant customer service is crucial to any business replica. Human resources professionals must be able to give explanation for the importance of customer service teaching and extract from organization broad support for a complete programme. (Reheer 1999) Research Philosophies: The researcher establishes assumption, examines and analyzes the active facts and synthesizes the substantiation into a feasible hypothetical sculpt. Nuisance dealing with objectives, syllabus, course content, desires and style are but a small number of the vital issues that can be determined only through the theoretical or philosophical mode of crisis solving. Even though a few authors give emphasis to the distinction among science and philosophy, the philosophic process of study follows fundamentally the similar steps as other methods of technical means of solving. The philosophic approach uses systematic facts as the foundation for formulating and test to do research suggestion. (Jerry R. Thomas 2005) Literature Review: Why chosen BPO for Research Method? Business process outsourcing or else recognized as BPO is the procedure of leveraging skill vendors in a variety of third worlds or developing countries for doing a career which was on one occasion the dependability of the venture. Or in simple thoughts, it is the method of shifting an internal occupation practice to an outside or external corporation which might have an entirely dissimilar ecological locality. The reassigning of internal business processes, for instance, customer relationship organization, investment secretarial, human resources and acquisition , to an external service source that improves these processes and administers these functions to an approved service criterion and, classically, at a abridged expenditure. In general, the processes being outsourcing as division of BPO are backend works like call centres, medical transcription, billing, payroll processing, and data entry and so on. Most of these jobs are outsourced by first world nations like USA and UK to third world nations like India, Philippines, China, Malaysia and some eastern European countries. These nations have a good number of English speaking youth who are given accent and job related training before they are inducted at a salary which is much lesser than what their counterparts in first world nations would require. This allows first world organizations to get advanced profits and offer improved services by lowering the prices and by recruiting more work than they could possibly do. In addition to promoting the first world nations economic standard, business process outsourcing has also benefited third world nations by generating much needed jobs. In the early days, BPO typically consisted of outsourcing processes such as payroll. Then it grew to take in employee reimbursement management. Now it includes a number of functions that are measured non-core to the primary business strategy. Now it is common for organizations to outsource fiscal and management processes, human resources functions, accounting and payroll and call centre and customer service performance. These outsourcing deals commonly engross multi-year contracts that can run into hundreds of millions of dollars. Frequently, the people performing the work within for the client firm are transferred and have converted into employees for the service provider. Leading outsourcing service providers in the BPO fields include US companies are Sutherland Global Services, IBM, Accenture, and Hewitt Associates, as well as European and Asian companies Capgemini, Genpact, TCS, Wipro, Infosys and many more and some of which also dominate the IT outsourcing business. (Ritu Thapar . 2010) PROBLEMS OF RESEARCH METHOD: ETHICS Business ethics is fairly ancient as a subject of personage and social apprehension, but it is comparatively newly fangled as an area of social logical analysis. The late 20th century was a deafening instance for business ethics. (Trevià ±o and Weaver 2003) Limitations of doing research: No access to information: As doing the research, there was any access to information while browsing because of the company policy. The firm will only give access to their company policy only if t helps their employees, agents and trusted third party service providers. (Privacy Policy, 2010) Lack of knowledge: It could be difficult completing the coursework with no knowledge about the sector or subject you have chosen. Resistance in companies and people for sharing knowledge

Essay --

Rerum Novarum refers to new beginnings. New beginnings refers to an open letter given to all Catholic bishops that addressed the circumstances of the working class. Written on May 15th 1891 by Tommaso Maria Zigliara, the Rerum Novarum examined the interrelation and duties between labor and capital. This document also covers the relationship between the government and citizens. The document begins with an introduction, as all documents do. The introduction opens with remarks on social issues of that time. The speaker continues to speak out against the Socialist motives, and those who allowed them to come about and prosper. The first issues to be discussed are rights and duties. Pope Leo introduces an idea that entails the rights every worker is to be afforded and the duties he then owes his employer. Pope Leo also states that this rule should go both ways and extend to the employer as well. The Pope states that workers are, â€Å"fully and faithfully to perform the work which has been freely and equitably agreed upon; never to injure the property, nor to outrage the person, of an employer; never to resort to violence in defending their own cause, nor to engage in riot or disorder; and to have nothing to do with men of evil principles, who work upon the people with artful promises of great results, and excite foolish hopes which usually end in useless regrets and grievous loss. (p20)† The duties a worker owes his employer are quite clearcut. As such, so are the duties of an employer to his workman. A decent employer is not to use their workers as bondsmen, they are to regard every man with self-respect. They are to treat each worker as a person aggrandized by a good Christian character. Employers are reminded that there is no shame... ... value them for their bodily functions, and not as people. However, if all employers were privy to the contents of Rerum Novarum that talk about how employers are supposed to treat their workers how they deserved to be treated, America’s poverty level would go down. Others who are not well read on the struggles of others should especially look into Rerum Novarum so that they may understand what it is like for others who are on the opposite side of the spectrum. It was paragraph twenty that spoke to me the most. As mentioned previously I really appreciate the fact that it is written somewhere that there should be a set of rights and duties between workers and their employers. All of the rights and duties are fair, and I believe that they should be followed by everyone. I also appreciate these rights because they should be followed whether or not someone is Christian.
